The coronavirus outbreak has significantly increased the amount of news consumed by mainstream media across all the countries where we conducted our surveys prior to and after the virus had taken into effect. Online and television news sources have seen significant increases and more people are identifying television as their main source of news, offering some respite from the picture of steady decline. Lockdowns have made it hard to distribute newspapers printed on paper. This has accelerated the transition to a digital future. Although the number of people who use social media and other online platforms has significantly increased across the globe but lockdowns have had a negative impact on their consumption.
